Aidan lost his mother while she gave birth to him, his father Andrew de Culter sent his son to be trained by the hospitallar monks, however the monks were suffering by severe persecution and so Andrew delivered his son into the care of Scotland's church. Aidan was brought up by Elisabeth Beckett, and her husband Michael Beckett took it apon himself to tutor Aidan in the ways of the church, learning not only to read and write but much about the politics of the day and it was from this that Aidan was to make his mark in life. As the war of independence heightened Michael Beckett was working for Bishop Lamberton one of Scotland's greatest patriots.

The bishop was in great need to gain information about the English in order to pass onto Robert the Bruce. This was initially achieved through Sir Harry de Brechin and his counter part at the English court Henry Fenes. When Henry was suspected of being a spy for the Scots Michael Beckett suggested his protégé Sir Aidan for the role of contact for another of Sir Harry's connections Tristan Moir. Sir Aidan with all his knowledge proved himself to be a key player for the Scots, even helping the young Tristan in his role so that he what not fall into the same problems that Henry Fenes had encountered.

Sir Aidan suggested Tristan for the role of rescuing the imprisoned Henry and was instrumental in uncovering the plot set out by David de Brownhill to kill Tristan and slur the name of Sir Harry and show that Sir Harry's brother Paul de Brechin was the mastermind behind the plot. While a child Sir Aidan knew of an orphaned girl who had been cared for by his adopted mother Elisabeth Beckett, her name was Eleanor Downhill, years had past since last they met and now during a visit to his adopted mother they met again, Eleanor had grown into a fine woman and they fell in love.

To celebrate their wedding Sir Harry in gratitude for what Sir Aidan had done for him organised for one of Europe's finest cooks Emilia Emhari  to prepare their wedding banquet. Emilia stayed on in the service of the de Culter household and even went on campaign as a suttler for Sir Aidan.

Sir Aidan continued to work through the church for Scottish independence this time working closely with the north lord Sir Andreas of Thurso. After Bannockburn Sir Aidan gained his life long dream of becoming a knight of the hospitallar and even went on a pilgrimage to Rome.
