David from an early age had been shown by his father the use of the longbow, David became so proficient in it's use he decided on a career as an archer .Once he was old enough he bade farewell to his father and travelled around Europe using his skills as a mercenary. Life as a mercenary had hardened David's view on life, he cared little for peoples suffering, the only thing that fuelled David was money. The chance of earning more presented itself on David's return to Scotland, he was paid by Paul de Brechin to spy on his half brother Sir Harry de Brechin. In order for Paul's plan to work David was to pretend to work for Sir Harry. The chance to expose Sir Harry's dealings with the English presented itself when Sir Harry sent David along with Tristan Moir to rescue Sir Harry's counter part Henry Fennes.
During their trip to Brittany David thought to expose Sir Harry to one of England's leading nobles Piers Gaveston and thus earn twice the money he had been promised. David met Gaveston secretly and told him all he knew, Gaveston was no fool and had David's father imprisoned, David now blackmailed by Gaveston to do his bidding or face the consequences that his father maybe killed. Gaveston now demanded that when David reached the point of rescuing Henry Fennes he should kill him thus Gaveston could get rid of one of his enemies and David would have been able to spare the life of his father. During the rescue David slipped away from Tristan and set up to kill Henry with deadly accuracy from the expert use of his bow.
Once Tristan had freed Henry, David saw his chance while the two men stood talking. He plied an arrow to his bow and fired, only to see the arrow embed itself into Tristan's shield, which Henry had picked up. David at once ran off but was caught up by Tristan who managed to wound David before had was able to flee. Now that David was exposed as a traitor he felt the only way he could save his father was to race back to Scotland tell the nobles that the traitors were in fact Tristan and Henry, this way he may gain enough sympathy to have the power of the Scottish lords help free his father. However things did not go well for David for the power of the church had been employed to seek out the truth and David was exposed in his dealings with Gaveston. Under torture David in turn revealed that it was Paul de Brechin that was conspiring against his brother.
David was imprisoned and languished there for many months, but fuelled with the need to know what had become of his father he escaped. David did indeed find out about his father and the terrible news that his father had died during his imprisonment left David in utter despair. For the next few years David life was a tale of drunkenness and debauchery he wandered around , scratching out a living were he could until one day he was caught horse stealing. He was brought before the local justicier but to his horror he found Henry Fennes standing before him. David thought his time had come, surely Henry would have revenge and sentence him to death, but to David's surprise Henry ordered him to take feudal service without pay as servant to Sir Andreas of Thurso.
David now had a purpose again he could work for Sir Andreas and gain revenge on the hated English who had killed his father. David now put all his energies into this second chance he had been given, over the next few years he served Sir Andreas well, eventually gaining his freedom from Sir Andreas's service .After Bannockburn and with his lust for revenge satisfied David was allowed to take up his father's estate, at last David de Brownhill felt accepted and he settled down to married life by marrying the second daughter of Emilia Emhari
