Lady Paulina Valois was born in France to a respected sword master - Charles Valois. Charles ensured that she received a good education and it was during her tutoring she befriended Margarette Dubois, who she would meet again some years later in Scotland. Paulina became an accomplished teacher and was even approached to resolve domestic disputes owing to her knowledge of feudal human rights.
She was distracted by the arrival at her father's sword mastery training school by two Scottish Knights - the debonair Sir Andreas of Thurso and intriguing Sir Harry de Brechin. At first she was overawed at the dashing Sir Andreas but realised that Sir Harry possessed the ability she respected most in a man. It was not long after this visit that Sir Harry requested Paulina's hand in marriage and they married in the old town of Prague, the home of Paulina's late mother. A huge feast was prepared by the renowned banqueter - Emilia Emhari.
Paulina bade farewell to her father and followed her husband to Scotland, however due to the warfare that was now raging between Scotland and England Sir Harry sent Paulina to Kildrummy castle for her protection. Here Paulina initially took the position of tutoring the daughter of Robert Bruce - Marjorie. After the capture of the Kings family Lady Paulina took charge if the daily running of the castle with the assistance of her friends Margarette Dubois, Lady Eleanor de Culter and the newly married Anne of Roxburgh, wife of Sir Andreas of Thurso. Together with the assistance of one of Sir Harry's trusted men and Sergeant of Arms - Alan of Harris, they provided shelter and protection for many a family from all over the Northeast of Scotland.
Paulina was instrumental in assisting Alan to fend off Sir Harry's half brother - Paul, who had hatched a plot to take all the women folk as hostages to the Earl of Buchan. It was Paulina who intervened just as Paul was about to brutality finish off Alan. Alan and his wife - Margaret, were eternally grateful to Paulina and swore to commit themselves to the Brechin household for the rest of their days.
After Bannockburn and the return of her husband they both returned to their ancient land in Angus, and it was here that Paulina returned to what she loved doing most - teaching, and now to John Mackay, second Laird of Thurso, son of Sir Andreas and Lady Anne of Roxburgh. This proved to be a wise choice for in the years to come John would take up the position of Chief Advisor to David II son of Robert the Bruce.
